Food 2006-06-17 - 10:26 p.m. Last Saturday when I was down home - not the Southern down home but down home meaning at my house - I cooked till I (almost) dropped. Okay, so that's going a bit far but I did make bread. P0rtugese bread to be exact. It came out all lovely, if I do say so. Seems that the times I made bread with Mum, who was a great bread-maker for years and years, did some good. I mixed the dough and kneaded it like it was second nature, no thinking about it at all. I sort of surprised myself. Granted it was a simple bread but it still had to prove and all that. And, to tell you the truth, it came out so well I ate nearly half of it before and during dinner. So then I cooked dinner: kangaroo steaks with a beauj0lais and rosemary jus (I'm a wanker!!) with pan fried vegetables. Sounds like a big wank, I know. And it is, just like those almost dodgy restaurants that go into all those huge descriptions that go on and on and then when you actually get your food, it's most times something so simple compared to what you were expecting. Yeah, the jus was the best part. Turned out really well. And I think, technically, it's not really a jus at all, but who gives a shit. And then on Sunday I made my blueberry muffins. Okay, so the recipe is not mine, but it's easy and they taste so good. Either on their own or with cream or vanilla ice-cream. And I guess it's bad that when you're trying to save money, indeed have to save money, you go and buy a bottle of Calvad0s because you've been hanging out to try it for years. And so you pay $37 for it and then get it home and have one after dinner...and then find it's okay but not what you were expecting. Still, I can use it in some desserts. And it's not that bad that I won't drink it again. I'm sure once I get used to it... And I can't believe that in this country you can buy FRench B0rdeaux and Beauj0lais for $8 ($6US) a bottle. As much as I love my Oz wine there's nothing like drinking a FrEnch wine (for those of us who like a bit of FrEnch).
