More I hates

2006-06-27 - 9:19 p.m.

More things I hate, no, make that abhor: the politicians of this country find it acceptable to grant themselves a whopping pay rise while the average worker struggles to make ends meet. And wouldn't you know it, a few weeks before the pay rise was granted tax cuts were granted to the people. Yay, how wonderful. And just have a guess who gets the best of that? That's right, the people in the high income tax bracket, which of course includes the politicians.

The populace were begging for the federal government to abolish at least the GST on fuel prices, considering we already pay a hefty tax on fuel as it is. The populace know that high fuel prices translates to high priced everything. Everything is either shipped by road, by rail or by air. All of the transport runs on fuel. It's not difficult to understand. Yet the prime minister, that fucking cocksucker, gives a tax break to the average worker of about $500 a year (which is not enough to help much at all considering how high fuel prices have jumped in the last few months) but given the high income earners a few thousand to help them out. Wonderful.

And after we get this fantastic news of the politicians, the tax office announces they will tax payouts to asbestos sufferers. Yes, that's right. This country's government, who says they won't do anything about the ruling (but, I hasten to add, they can if they wanted to) have decided to shit in the face of the people once again. Asbestos sufferers collectively sued J@mes H@rdie and won a four billion dollar (Oz) settlement. Mind you, that's to be divided amongst a lot of parties. And, so many of the sufferers haven't lived to see the 'win'. But now the tax office is going to tax the sufferers; people who were put at risk in their working lives by a business that in later years knew of the damage asbestos was causing and still didn't do anything about it. This decision was finalised a few days ago and I still can't come to terms with it. It made me, and still does make me, sick to my stomach.

What angers me about this taxing of asbestos sufferers and the huge pay rise to politicians while the lower income earners are really hurting - losing houses and the like - is that this country is doing very well financially, thank you very much. This country has billions of dollars in surplus yet the government still squeezes the battlers. It's gone beyond a joke.

I would say wait till the revolution, but we're an apathetic lot and I know that'd never happen, no matter what. And that angers me a little too, because I know nothing will change.
